How Your Brakes Work

Your brake system is made up of several parts. Today’s vehicles use disc brakes with the exception of a few that still use drum brakes. For disc brakes, brake fluid is pushed into the brake lines when you press on the pedal. This process creates hydraulic pressure, which forces the brake pads to squeeze against the rotor. The pad grips the metal surface, creating friction as it forces the wheel to stop turning. The friction is what wears out the brake pads, which generally happens between 20,000 and 40,000 miles.

Types of Brake Pads

There are three main types of brake pads in use today. Non-metallic pads are also known as organic because they use a blend of synthetic or man-made materials, such as sintered glass or cellulose. These pads are quiet and easier on the rotors, but they don’t last as long as other brake pads.

Semi-metallic brake pads contain some metals mixed with non-metallic materials. They last longer but are noisier and harder on the rotors. Ceramic brake pads last longer, are quieter, and don’t wear on the rotors as much. They feature copper fibers and porcelain and clay.

How to Know When Your Brake Pads are Worn Out

Brake pads have a metal plate, which wears down with friction. When the plate is less than 3/32 of an inch, the pads need to be replaced. You may also notice signs that your pads need to be replaced.

• Strange sounds when you apply the brakes, which could include squealing and grinding.
• It takes longer for your vehicle to stop when you press on the brake pedal.
• You feel a pulsing in the pedal when you apply the brakes or the brakes feel spongy or stiff.
• The vehicle may pull to one side when you brake if the brake pad is only worn on one side.
• You can look at the rotors and look for grooves on the surface.
